Troy Karper

Tower City, PA
Previous Occupation: "Jack of All Trades"
Previous Income: $30,000
Current Income: $150,000

Troy Karper was known as the "jack of all trades" in his career before joining NAA in 2005. Born in Harrisburg, PA, Troy went to college for about 20 minutes and realized it wasn't for him. Troy has owned a car lot, a truck salvage business, and a computer business. He has also been a DJ, construction worker, and a ranch hand. He also owned a bookbinding business with his brother and worked in restaurants as a bartender, waiter, cook, and manager.

Troy was struggling and living day- to -day on tips. His efforts were hard and he had little to show for it.

In the summer of 2005 a co-worker of his (now agency manager Rob Self) introduced Troy to NAA. Rob, who was friends with Casey Watkins, began telling Troy about the opportunity: "I was skeptical about NAA in the beginning, but when Rob went out his first night and wrote enough apps to make $2000 in commissions; I signed up for my insurance license course the next day."

From the beginning, Troy had the full support of his wife and family: "Money was tight and I was concerned about buying leads, but my first week's work resulted in $2450 in commissions. I was off and running from there. I did have a challenge about two months in; I ran all week (16 appointments) and wrote no apps! It was a struggle that week to stay positive and stick with it, but deep down I knew that this was just a fluke, and the good weeks were the norm. I was proven right when I was right back on track the next week!"

Troy had been making around $30K a year in previous jobs, but during his first year at NAA, his income was over $100K in commissions. NAA has dramatically changed his life for the better. In October of 2006, he was able to pay cash for his wedding in Key West.

"Perhaps the most meaningful change has been being able to spend more time with my two sons. In the restaurant business, I was trapped in a schedule of working evenings and weekends. When my sons were home, I was at work. When I was home, they were at school. I felt like I had missed years of my sons' lives. Now I schedule my work around my family, and am able to spend much more quality time with then than I had ever had before."

Troy attributes his success with NAA to his upline managers, Rob Self, Casey Watkins, and Stephen Davies: "These guys as well as the NAA owners and staff have laid out a path for success. All you have to do is follow it!"

When I decided to get my license and try my luck with NAA I wasn't sure I would like it. In fact, I was pretty sure I wouldn't like it. I had visions of having to wear a tie everyday, having to be a 'slick' salesman, and constantly talking to people about death. I didn't think I would like it, but I was willing to do it if it would make my family's situation better. What I quickly found out was that this was not only profitable, but the most enjoyable 'job' I had ever had. I enjoyed every aspect of it: working as a consultant for families who needed help with their coverage needs, not being tied to a desk, and working with the absolute best group of people I have ever met."

Troy advises new agents not to try to reinvent the wheel because NAA already lays out a path for them. All you have to do is follow it and you'll be successful.

"About 2 weeks into this, I told Casey that this was what I was going to do until I retire. I love what I do, so I see myself continuing to grow an agency, continuing to work on improving myself, and continuing to help others make their dreams come true through NAA."
